LEICESTER are delighted to announce talented teenager Sonny Springer will be back for a second season with the Lion Cubs in 2025.
Springer, who only turned 16 last month, was one of the standout newcomers in the National Development League this year, starting at reserve on a 3.00 average which he almost doubled to finish on 5.60 as he quickly moved into the main body of the team.
He was consistent around his home track at Beaumont Park, winning at least one race in all five NDL meetings there, but his big highlight came on the road when he scored 12+2 from six rides in an impressive display as the Lion Cubs won at Middlesbrough.
And he says returning to familiar surroundings next year is another bonus as he looks to push on once again in 2025.
Springer said: “I am comfortable with Leicester, I’ve dialled the track in now, and I’m more confident around the people and I know what to expect.
“I really thought I would have stayed at reserve for the whole season this year as we had a pretty strong team, but we were going in the right direction from the start and when I got moved to No.2 it definitely brought me on.
“My targets for 2025 are to get as many points as I can and set a better average than last season.
“I feel like we can win another title, Leicester have won a few now and it’s a great team, but we know anything can happen in speedway.
“Over the winter I’ll be doing a bit of running, and I’m possibly going to try motocross, and we’ll also be building the bikes up because I wouldn’t be riding otherwise!”
Springer is the second member of the Lion Cubs’ 2024 team to be handed a return for next season, along with new captain Max James, and they join Ben Trigger, Ryan Ingram and Eli Meadows as confirmed starters. The remaining two riders are set to be named this weekend.
