SATURDAY PREVIEW: BRITISH YOUTH + WOMEN'S OPEN

LEICESTER host a packed programme of racing with the British Youth Championship and the Women’s British Open Final taking place on Saturday (5pm).

The best of the UK’s young talent in four different categories – 500cc, 250cc, 125cc and 125cc support – will be in action at the Pidcock Motorcycles Arena, Beaumont Park, along with some of the world’s top female racers battling for the official British Open title.

In the 500cc category it’s another chance for supporters to see 15-year-old William Cairns, son of club owner Paul, who has been racking up the points in the NDL and is expected to take the title at that level.

The 250cc section features Lions mascots Seth Norman and Casper Kluczniak along with the talented Cooper Rushen, whilst Oliver Bovingdon leads the way at 125cc level.

British Youth boss Neil Vatcher said: “We are really excited about returning to Leicester for a standalone British Youth round as we have not managed to come for a few seasons now, due to the number of fixtures they have had with competing in two leagues.

“However, I knew when Paul Cairns took the reins at Leicester he would be keen to host a round, and sure enough we have all managed to make that happen which is fantastic.

“I have previously stated that it seems like each year the standard of riders improve, and again the quality of the riders competing in 2024 can only be descried as fantastic, and each and every round we host I am really excited to see the development of all the riders.”

Over 40 races are scheduled including Finals in all categories, with an additional attraction being the Women’s British Open Final, featuring Celina Liebmann who raced for Workington in the Championship this year.

Top British female racers Rachel Hellowell and Katie Gordon will be keen to ensure Liebmann does not have things all her own way, whilst Teagan Pedler has made the trip from Australia to compete.

ACU Ambassador for Women Pip Laverty said: “The FIM Women’s Academy has generated strong interest, but it's crucial for national federations to focus on grassroots development to nurture emerging talent now that a clear pathway exists.

“This is why Neil Vatcher’s work with the Junior and Women’s Championships is so vital and needs as much support as possible.

“I look forward to the day that a British female speedway rider becomes World No.1. Currently, Germany's Celina Liebmann holds that title, with Australia’s Anika Loftus and the Netherlands’ Nynke Sibesma close behind. Our top British rider, Rachel Hellowell, is ranked fifth.

“Join us at Leicester to support the development leagues and watch Rachel and Katie compete for the official British title.”

Gates open on Saturday at 3.30pm and between 4pm-4.30pm there will be an autograph session featuring the female racers.

Admission is £10 for adults and concessions, with all children admitted free.
