LEICESTER Speedway are pleased to announce the appointment of former Great Britain World Cup star Simon Stead as new team manager.
Simon joins us after leading Sheffield to the championship title in his first season as a manager and his work with riders has impressed club bosses immensely.
It means a return to Beaumont Park for Simon after he had a spell with us during his riding career.
And thanks to the new designated race nights for the Premiership and Championship, we are pleased to confirm he will also stay in charge of Sheffield thanks to no conflict of fixtures.
“It wasn’t something I expected to be honest,” he said.
“It’s not as if I’m a stranger at Leicester which is a big plus if you ask me. I raced there for a season not so long back and I really did have a great rapport with the fans.
“That was at a time too where the team wasn’t particularly performing to its capability but I kept plugging away, always giving it 100 per cent and I think the supporters appreciated that.
“So it will be good to go back there, but I know how desperate they are to have a much better season.
“They haven’t had it easy for a while now, particularly since stepping up into the top flight and there really is a genuine excitement and buzz about Leicester this year.
“And so there should be to be honest. The Bates’, Neil Machin, Dave Darcy and others at the club have got a winning mentality – and the ambition they’ve shown this winter to put things right deserves a huge amount of credit.
“The team they’ve assembled oozes quality and potential and for me we are genuine play-off contenders who can seriously challenge for silverware this year.”
All at the Watling JCB Lions welcome Simon back to Beaumont Park and wish him well for a successful time in charge.
