LEICESTER BOSS HOPEFUL OF START DATE

LEICESTER Speedway chief Stewart Dickson is hopeful of getting a date for the season to start soon.

Dickson believes August is a realistic target following the relaxation of social distancing and the reopening of pubs, restaurants and other areas of the hospitality and tourism industry announced from July 4.

The club already have a plan in place to ensure meetings can go ahead on a safe environment with crowds spread across all corners of the Paul Chapman and Sons Arena.

“We are hopeful of getting a date,” said the Watling JCB Lions boss. “August is what I’ve had my money on.

“We need to get the buzz and the excitement of a new season up again. We need to do a press and practice session if at all possible, not just here at Leicester but around the clubs.

“There were a lot of good things in the build-up to the new season, Jason Crump and Nicki Pedersen coming back to the UK, Berwick getting permission to amend their track, so much good was done.

“And it’s been frustrating for the riders because they’ve done their diet sheets, followed their fitness programmes and that’s had to continue for another four months.

“I feel for the riders more than anyone really.

“Hopefully we will get a start date and we can all look forward to getting back to the Paul Chapman and Sons Arena for meetings.

“I’ve enjoyed seeing all the positive feedback from the riders on the track work we have done to smooth the surface and it was good to welcome Poole here on Tuesday, they knew they were coming to the home of the champions and they should remember that!”
