DAN HEADS THOMPSON ONE-TWO

LEICESTER’S Dan and Joe Thompson dominated Saturday’s British Youth Championship round at the Paul Chapman & Sons Area.

The 16-year-old twins, who would have raced for the senior Watling JCB Lions side in the cancelled league season, finished one-two in the behind-closed-doors event, Dan going unbeaten throughout the meeting and leading Joe home in the Final.

Dan won all five of his rides with a series of sharp starts, and held a perfect line in the decider to prevent Joe from finding a way through.

Joe had a more eventful evening as he was involved in a frightening pile-up in Heat 3 when Sam Hagon hit the back straight fence just ahead of him. Joe clipped the stray bike and was flung onto the centre-green, but thankfully both riders walked away although Hagon did not race again.

There was then a close scrap between Joe and Harry McGurk with the Belle Vue rider disqualified for falling at the start of the second lap of Heat 6.

Winner Dan said: “It was great, I’ve been working on my gating since the first round at Scunthorpe, doing some training days with some good riders and it’s really helped me a lot.

“Especially with it being slick on the track, gating was the biggest thing for me and I didn’t miss a start, which was great.”

Meanwhile Lions mascot Max James finished runner-up in the 250cc category as Luke Harrison reversed the result of the opening round at Scunthorpe with an unbeaten display.

The Thompsons now prepare for a busy Bank Holiday weekend as the next round of the Youth series takes place at King’s Lynn on Sunday (August 30), and they will then race for the Roger Webster Lion Cubs in a challenge fixture at Scunthorpe on August 31.
