LEICESTER have handed Tom Spencer a fully deserved return to their National Development League side for 2022.
Spencer, 21, was one of the big success stories of last season and received the vote as Lion Cubs boss Dave Howard’s Rider of the Year.
After racing for Cradley in 2019, Spencer took a huge step forward at the Paul Chapman & Sons Arena and established himself as a solid performer in the middle-order, registering an impressive 5.53 average.
And remarkably he did not record a single last place in any of his 27 outings across six home matches, including the ultimately expunged clash with Eastbourne.
That overall average would have been even higher but for the fact that his highest score of the season came in the return fixture against the Seagulls at Arlington where Spencer notched a tremendous 13+1 from five rides, with that meeting also deleted from the records at the end of the year after the Sussex side withdrew.
Howard said: “Tom had by far his best season to date in 2021, achieved even though for much of the year he was also carrying a back injury - which shows his great ability and also his value to the team.
“So, having had the winter to recover his back to full strength, Tom can take another step forward in his career in 2022 with the Lion Cubs.”
Spencer joins new signing Connor Coles in the top five of the Cubs’ line-up, with news of further signings expected to follow later this week.
