HUNGRY LIONS DO IT AGAIN

RAMPANT Leicester had two maximum men in Saturday’s 65-24 demolition of Newcastle at the Paul Chapman and Sons Arena.

Nick Morris (14+1) and skipper Kyle Howarth (11+1) were both unbeaten by a Diamond rider as every Watling JCB Lions rider cashed in with heavy scores.

Stewart Dickson’s men have piled up scores of 64, 62 and 65 in their three home meetings so far this season but now prepare for the ultimate test with the visit of champions Poole next Saturday in what promises to be one of the biggest meetings of the Championship season.

The score would have been even more emphatic had Joe Thompson not fallen when leading the fourth heat and allowed Paul Starke the only Newcastle race win of the night.

James Wright deserves credit for never giving up in the Diamonds side but, in truth, this was a complete mismatch.

Skipper Howarth said: “We’ve done the job and that’s all we can do.

“The lads are determined and work hard as a team and we’ve had three massive scores in home meetings now.

“You can only beat what’s in front of you but we know there are tougher tests to come and we’ve got a big weekend to come when we go to Scunthorpe on Friday and then we’re back here against the champions on Saturday.

“I’d like to thank all the fans who turned out on a cold night and respect to the Newcastle fans who made the trip down here.

“Hopefully the place will be packed next Saturday. When the fixtures came out the first one everyone looked for was Poole at home and it’s on a Bank Holiday weekend too so it should be a cracker.”

LEICESTER 65: Nick Morris 14+1, Kyle Howarth 11+1, Richie Worrall 11, Connor Mountain 9+3, Dan Thompson 8+2, Joe Thompson 6+1, Anders Rowe 6.
NEWCASTLE 24: Paul Starke 9, James Wright 6, Matthew Wethers 5, Lee Complin 2, Bradley Wilson-Dean 1, George Congreve 1, Max Clegg 0.
