LEICESTER are pleased to announce the signing of former British Under-19 Champion Max Clegg to bring them back to a full seven-rider line-up.
Clegg, now 25, joins the Watling JCB Lions as a replacement for Anders Rowe, who left the club last month.
And it will be a second spell at the Paul Chapman & Sons Arena for the Yorkshireman, who rode for the Lions in the top-flight in 2014 under the old Elite League Fast Track system for youngsters.
Since then, Clegg has raced primarily at Championship level for Edinburgh and then Newcastle, who he joined in 2019, before the Diamonds withdrew from the Championship a fortnight ago.
He will make his Lions debut in the Summer Trophy trip to Redcar on Friday July 15, before lining up in the vital home league clash with Edinburgh one night later.
Lions boss Stewart Dickson said: “Obviously it’s disappointing how Max became available with the closure of Newcastle, but I do think he can do a very decent job for Leicester.
“He comes in for us at reserve on a 4.52 average after racing in the difficult No.4 position for Newcastle for the last two seasons, and he has averaged comfortably over five for much of that time.
“Coming into a winning team should hopefully benefit Max, and he will also have a couple of practice sessions before his home debut.
“I’m looking forward to working with him, and after speaking to him on several occasions I know he’s really up for it.
“I’ve never worked with Max myself but I’ve spoken to a few of our boys who have raced with him, and I’ve heard good things, so we look forward to welcoming him into the team.”
