LIONS V WORKINGTON (PL) - PREVIEW

The Harry Jordan Haulage Lions play host to the Workington Comets at home on Saturday.

The visitors are currently top of the Premier League table with twelve points from five matches and they will test Leicester’s unbeaten home record to the full.

“Workington will present us with a stern test of our resolve to maintain an unbeaten home record and they are big track specialists so should be relishing their visit here. They had an injury jinxed season in 2012 but still managed to be one of the fore-runners in the Premier League. Now they have resumed where they left off and are again a formidable outfit that oozes class and respect – but not too much respect as we cannot afford to stand on ceremony” commented the Lions co-promoter Alan Jones.

The Lions will be back to full strength for the first time in five weeks; the last occasion was their second leg Knock-out Cup win against Edinburgh on 13th April and the fixture will mark the new reserve partnership of Robert Branford and Alex Edberg. The British Under-21 Champion missed Leicester’s win against Ipswich last week due to a commitment to ride in a World Under-21 qualifier at Rawicz, Poland.

Meanwhile Workington are without Tero Aarnio who has four broken bones in his foot and will cover for his absence by operating the rider replacement rule and there is a fitness doubt over reserve Chris Mills.

It is a busy weekend for the Leicester team who the following day head north to race against the Glasgow Tigers. The Scottish club have begun the season in winning form having won four out of their first five home meetings and are led by two of British Speedway’s longest serving riders Joe Screen and James Grieves. Supporting these two evergreens is the former Leicester rider Henning Bager and winter signing from Somerset James Wright. The remainder of the side is made up by first year Premier League riders, Joe Jacobs, who also rides in the lower tier for Coventry, and two newcomers from Australia, Joey Ringwood and Harley Horwood.

“We have another long trip ahead of us on Sunday to Glasgow and last season we came back with the points. The Tigers have three new faces themselves in the team and with Scunthorpe coming away with a draw there last week we have to believe it is within ourselves to at least achieve a similar outcome as the Scorpions” added Jones.

STOP PRESS: We have been informed that Chris Mills is not fit to ride for Workington on Saturday and will be replaced by Cameron Heeps
