THE FREESTYLE SHOW - PREVIEW

The Jordan Road Surfacing Stadium hosts an event with a difference on Saturday that begins with a Speedway meeting followed by two sessions of Freestyle Motocross. The day boasts fantastic entertainment from start to finish, with speedway racing getting the show on the road at 1.00 pm with fifteen heats consisting of four qualifying races, ten main event heats and a Grand Final where the winner takes all.

Six of the competitors ride regularly in the Elite League with Rory Schlein returning to Leicester for the first time since he was third in the 2011 Pride of the Midlands meeting. Danny King, the inspirational captain of the table topping Birmingham ‘Brummies’ is included in the line-up and also Lewis Bridger who represented Team GB in this season’s Speedway World Cup. Richie Worrall, who is having a highly successful year with King’s Lynn and Newcastle, has accepted an invitation to ride and so too has Ashley Birks, captain of the Premier League Champions, the Scunthorpe Scorpions along with the teenage sensation Adam Ellis who rides for Ipswich. Local interest will be provided by the captain of Leicester, Kevin Doolan, who is a popular figure in the Lions team. Completing the line-up are four British riders; Chris Widman, a recent winner of the Mick Spiers Memorial Trophy who rides in the National League for Isle of Wight and his teammate Brendan Johnson; Lee Geary the captain of the Long Eaton team and the Stoke Potters rider Shaun Tedman.

After the speedway meeting has ended the show moves on to feature the Freestyle Motocross event. This is a raw motorsport full of adrenaline where stunt riders showcase a wide selection of motocross tricks to music. Many of these moves will result in the rider exiting their seat, taking their hands off the handlebars and rotating their body around the bike.

“If you haven’t seen Freestyle Motocross before then you are in for something very special. The riders will jump from portable ramps placed on the centre green, reaching heights of around 40 feet and performing a fully choreographed stunt show. The riders will often take off one after another and perform stunts which involve completely letting go of the bike. The gates open at 11.00 am so come along to The Freestyle Show, cheer on the speedway riders and enjoy the sport you love and at the same time see something different” commented the Lions Co-promoter Alan Jones.
