LEICESTER LINK UP FOR PROSTATE CANCER UK

LEICESTER Speedway have teamed up with two sporting greats to support and promote Prostate Cancer UK this weekend.

Club bosses are good friends with former football stars John Gidman, a cup winner with Manchester United, and ex-Liverpool and Aston Villa man Steve Staunton.

Now the Watling JCB Lions are supporting the efforts of the duo, which includes a special event in Sandals Bar Lounge and Restaurant, Mijas, Spain where they are giving their services free of charge on October 19.

A collection will be held at the Paul Chapman and Sons Arena, Beaumont Park, when the Watling JCB Lions face Redcar in their play-off semi-final decider on Saturday.

All money raised will go to Prostate Cancer UK and the club are also keen to promote the cause.

Club co-owner Paul Bates, who is a personal friend of Gidman and Staunton, is delighted to be lending his support.

He said: “Giddy and Steve are good pals and they are doing a Q&A free of charge and between us we came up with the idea of Leicester Speedway supporting the project.

“I’ve also been amazed to see the work of Sky Sports presenter Jeff Stelling in raising money and also the profile of Prostate Cancer UK. This is a serious cause and it’s up to us to stand up against the disease.

“I would urge everyone attending the meeting on Saturday to dig deep and help us raise a good amount for the cause.”

Meanwhile Gidman, who played over 100 games for Manchester United and was a hero at Aston Villa, is delighted to see Leicester Speedway backing the cause.

“I’ve been to Speedway and I think it’s a great sport,” he said. “I would like to thank Paul and everyone at Leicester for their wonderful support of this great cause.”
